DK, Udupi receive copious amounts of rain; destruction reported

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 11: Various parts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts received heavy rains in short durations on Monday. A few incidents of minor damage and destruction were also reported.

Heavy rains lashed Mangaluru city and surrounding rural areas on Monday morning. Puttur, Kadaba, Subramanya and Bantwal also received good amount of rain both in the morning and evening.

In Udupi district, Kundapur, Byndoor and Karkala taluks received incessant rains, while Udupi city, Manipal and Malpe experienced intermittent showers. Houses of Baikady Fayaz and Laxmi Marakala in Brahmavara taluk got damaged.

Mescom suffered a loss of Rs 25.72 lac due to damage and destructions of electricity poles and transmission wires. Electricity supply got disrupted for several hours in the district of Udupi. In total 151 electricity poles, 3.13 km wire and 20 transformer got damaged.

In Bajpe, a tree fell on the house of Chandrahasa Shetty and damaged the cow shed. Under Ganjimath gram panchayat limits, lightning struck the house of Keshava, at Badagulipadi causing severe damage.

In Beltangady, widespread destruction is reported from Mulikaru of Dharmasthala village. More than 50 arecanut trees of Perna Malekudiya were uprooted due to high velocity winds. Tiles of the house also blew off. Locals helped in repairing the house on temporary basis. House and farm of Shankara also got damaged. The national highway got inundated at Somanthadka of Mundaje village on Monday.

The IMD has declared red alert on Tuesday and Wednesday in coastal region. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea as there is possibility of winds blowing at the speed of 45 to 55 km per hour.
