Three CRPF Troopers Hurt in Two Srinagar Blasts

Srinagar, Oct 25 (IANS): Two hand grenade explosions rocked the heart of Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar Tuesday afternoon, wounding three paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers, police said.

The blasts triggered panic in the city and came ahead of the likely announcement by the state government revoking the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from certain areas of the state.

A police officer said separatist guerrillas tossed a hand grenade which fell and exploded inside the CRPF camp in busy Budshah Chowk area, resulting in injuries to three jawans.

"The injured jawans were immediately shifted to hospital," the officer said.

Guerrillas also hurled a grenade at a police picket near the main city bus stand at Batmaloo in the city.

"The grenade exploded near the picket without causing any injury," he added.

The blasts triggered panic and tension in the city centre Lal Chowk and at Batmaloo with the authorities ordering a security beef-up.

Searches were also conducted by police and CRPF troopers in Budshah Chowk area where shopkeepers downed their shutters in panic.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blasts.
