Bantwal, Jul 6: A significant awareness march titled Parisara Nyayakkagi Yuvadhwani – Niradariya Nade’ (Youth Voice for Environmental Justice – Walk for River Restoration) is set to commence on Sunday July 7 from Bantwal and will conclude in Ullal on Tuesday. Organized under the leadership of Yuva Munnade Karnataka and the Samvada Yuva Sampanmula Kendra, Mangaluru, the march aims to educate the public about the dangers posed by riverbank deforestation, polluted water, sand mining, and plastic waste disposal in rivers. The objective is to raise awareness among the public, school and college students, municipal and corporation officials, farmers, and religious institutions through various activities including riverbank visits, temple, church, and mosque visits, Thumbe dam and water treatment plant inspections, and boat trips.
Inauguration at Baddakatte
The march will kick off at the cremation ground near Baddakatte on Sunday morning. The itinerary includes visits to Bantwal, the Bantwal rural police station, the fire brigade office, and the Nandavar temple via the Panemangalore bridge. The first day will culminate with a tour of Pavoor Island, nearby churches, and the Inoli Somanatheshwara temple, as well as discussions with local farmers.
Second day activities
On the second day, the march will start with a visit to the Bantwal municipality office, followed by engagements with officials. The participants will then visit government schools and colleges, and hold an awareness program at the B C Road market. Further visits will include the Bantwal urban police station, a local mosque, and the Thumbe vented dam. The day will end with visits to the Adyar new bridge and a meeting with Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba, concluding at Pumpwell Circle.
Final day schedule
On the third day, July 9, the march will proceed from Pumpwell towards Ullal, including a visit to the Ullal bridge and awareness activities at Thokkottu market. The march will conclude at Ullal beach, where the Netravati river meets the sea. After completing the march, the organizers plan to meet with the deputy commissioner to submit a memorandum, as stated in a press release by youth leader Akash.
