Indian Scientists Produce Petrol from Plastic!

Indian Scientists Produce Petrol from Plastic!

Deepti Saxena

Dehra Dun, Nov 17 (PTI): A team of scientists at the Indian Institute of Petroleum in Dehra Dun has developed a new technology to convert environmentally-hazardous plastic into petroleum products.

After nearly a decade-long experiments, the team of six scientists of IIP led by its Director Madhukar Omkarnath Garg has managed to achieve a breakthrough in developing a 'combination of catalysts' which can convert the plastic either into gasoline or diesel or aromatics along with liquefied petroleum gas as a common byproduct.

Madhukar Garg

"We believe it is a big achievement of our scientists to produce petroleum products from waste plastics," IIP spokesman S K Sharma said in Dehra Dun on Wednesday.

GAIL, which has sponsored the entire project, is also exploring the economic viability of the project in order to produce the petroleum products on mass-scale, scientists said.

"The unique features of the technology is that liquid fuel -- gasoline and diesel -- meets Euro III fuel specifications and different products can be obtained from the same raw material simply by changing the catalysts and operating parameters," Sanat Kumar, a member of the research team, said.

Moreover, the process is completely environmental friendly as no toxic substances are emitted, he said, adding that almost 100 per cent conversion is achieved and formation of the residue is dependent upon the quality of the raw material and can be as low as less than 0.5 per cent in case of clean raw material.

"The process is suitable for small as well as large scale industries," said Shrikant Nanoti, another scientist involved in the project.

The exploration of feasibility of the project 'Waste Plastics to Fuels and Petrochemicals' was started in 2002 and it took almost four years to establish that the conversion of waste plastics, the safe disposal of which has become a world-wide problem, into fuel is possible.

The process involves pyrolysis of waste plastics at high temperatures for breaking molecules and catalytic conversion followed by condensation to liquefy to get gasoline or diesel or aromatics.

According to an estimate, the world-wide consumption of plastic is over 300 million tonnes and is increasing at a rate of 10-12 per cent annually.

Polyolefinic plastic like polyethylene and polypropylene, which is the main raw material for producing petrol and other products, accounts for 65 to 70 per cent of the total consumption.

From one kg raw polyolefinic plastic, 650-700 ml petrol along with LPG or 850 ml diesel along with LPG or 450-500 ml aromatics along with LPG could be produced.

Dear all please note that plastic is also a petroleum product. So crude oil price will not reduce. This invention will reduce plastic waste a big threat to environment.I still remember bogus Ramar Pille who once made evryone fool by producing petrol from water. He might be wrong but need of the hour is some breakthrough like producing hydrocarbon from very cheap raw material without depending on natural oil and gas resource.

As we all know, plastic is produced from crude oil. "Kereya neeranu kerege chelli.....". It is hydrocarbon material and can be pyrolized to produce heat and thus energy, the main problem though are the toxic byproducts.

Not from plastics also, oils can be produced from scrap tires too. A lot of research studies are going in this direction all over the world.

Readers need to note that 300Million tons/year it is consumption that means used plastic for recycling increasing 10-12 % / year.It will be cheaper than the present value, same time cleaning of mother nature.Plastic in natural environment does not decompose hence unemployed n poor people will be able to make a part of their day today living income generation. This is a very great news. Also it will reduce fractional price, that mean oil companies has to produce less 250 million tons /year which is likely to preserve the existing oil sources. If it does not make difference in oil market n preserve, Cause of increase vehicals on the road day by day this fraction will help. In combining all the alternative energy like electric, solar pannels,
biodegradable substances n so fore we will achieve better for the generation to come

MR. SHIVAPRASAD, MUMBAI: Indeed, your question is a serious issue. The oil companies, especially in the U.S. are the most self-centered group of business people. A few years back, the Exxon company was the richest corporation but paid no tax to the government. They simply look after their own interest and will try to undermine any other challenge they are faced with, if their wealth and growth are in danger.

Wow, this is indeed a great achievement by our scientists. Plastic waste has been an environment problem for decades. Now we can think of recycling plastic and get fuel. Hats off to the great scientists for this great achievement. This innovation will not only solve our plastic waste disposal problem, but also generate fuel which is getting costlier and scarce by the day.
Only criteria of concern is the cost of producing this fuel. Hopefully it will be cheaper than the regular one that we import.

JAIMINI P.B.: That is a very interesting question to be pondered. Right after the 2nd world war, since most the rubber- pepper and other consumer goods were in short supply due to the massive bombing in Malaysia and such other areas where those consumer goods were cultivated. Brazil had plenty of them, and she became very rich, and started constructing buildings. Later on the the income was rapidly
reduced. The higher oil price changed the Gulf countries to fancy lands of affluence, and the oil wealth also created prosperity in the neighbouring countries.

If the oil production from plastic can be made easy and economical, that will re-write the economic
history, also it will be forced to shift the prosperity locations. Now, see the economic crisis of
the U.S. and Europe? Nobody saw it coming!

MR. PADDU: Based on the labour
    associated with the plastic, the
price will vary. In the U.S.,
the soft drink bottles pressed can
be available for less than 40 cents
per K.G. Some plastic waste from the carpet mills can be available
for less than 10 cents/K.G. If processed and turned like resins,
the cost would be increased greatly. Exchange rate $ 1.00
    Rs. 52.00 (around).

What plastic they are talking about? Used or fresh? And what about the cost of producing plastic itself? Even if they succeed, will the lobby of oil producing group will allow? when plastic burns it gives out more pollution and you think using plastic anywhere has any benefits. it would be better ban plastic except for biodegradable. i heard of Brazil usig bio-alcohol instead of petrol. the only problem with this alcohol, is that the vehicles still needs petrol to start! instead try inovating solar power which is less polluting.

I felt like laughing after reading this article! First of all we should understand that plastics are made from by products of petroleum industries and are Ethylene, Methylene, Propylene etc which after polymerisation are called Polyethylene, Polymethylene, polypropylene etc. Since they are made from petroleum products it is foolish to convert them back to petroleum products which not only is energy consuming but is polluting. Instead it is better to recycle them which is cheaper and environment friendly. Dont we have better issues to do research!?

If this technology is commercially viable then many Petroleum and allied companies will try to prove them wrong as there will be direct impact on their revenues.

Any ways we need to be proud that an Indian R&D organization has invented this with limited resources and encouragement given to the indigenous R&D.

A good move towards development of the economy, price rate will increase for waste plastic.
Please note to hold the formula of conversion of pastic to petroleum products at high security same as the formula held securly held by Coca Cola firm.
The scientists who worked on this project for so many long years should take the full credited and also who sponsored it.
But it shouldn't happen like people from this group may sell the formula to some 3rd party just for earning some billions. Even some corrupt politicians may get involved or may force the scientist who were involved in this project to share with the information.
My concern being the security of the people involved, because this invention will bring revolution in the market of petrol and its products internationally.
Some vested interested may also try to prove for its false scope.

If what has been claimed is true (650-700 ml petrol from 1 kg plastic) and if the process of such production is reasonably cheap then such discovery deserves nothing less than a nobel prize. However, most likely there are certain ifs and buts and so this news has not spread like wildfire.

Also, Oil companies (big foreign ones) will do everything in their power to decimate any such discovery. Even the Government of India may not encourage such discovery because it would lead to cheap fuel and therefore lesser tax collection.
