Bengaluru, Oct 8: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a warning to cake lovers in Karnataka after discovering carcinogenic ingredients in 12 out of 235 cake samples tested across the state.

FSSAI revealed that harmful substances were detected in popular cake varieties, including Red Velvet and Black Forest.

Food Safety Commissioner Srinivas K has strictly warned bakery owners not to use any chemicals or colours in cakes that could cause cancer. He stated, “Due to suspicion that cancer-causing ingredients were being used in cakes across the state, 235 samples were tested. Out of these, harmful elements like Aloona Red, Sunset Yellow, Ponceau 4R, and Carmoisine were found in 12 samples.”

Previously, the food safety department banned the use of artificial colours in food items such as Gobi Manchurian, Kabab, and Pani Puri. With artificial colours frequently used in cake preparations, the department has now prohibited their use in Red Velvet and Black Forest cakes. Cake manufacturers have been warned to strictly follow the food safety regulations.
