Srinagar, Dec 8 (IANS): The family of a woman found dead mysteriously at her in-law's house last month and civil society members staged another silent protest here Thursday, seeking justice for her, alleging it was a case of domestic violence.

They held a silent candlelight protest Wednesday.

Shazia Majid, a mother of three who worked as a librarian at the local Islamic University of Science and Technology, was found hanging at her in-law's house in Bagh-e-Mehtab colony in Srinagar Nov 6.

Initially, the media reported the death as "suspected suicide" but now the family is seeking investigations into the "mysterious" death which they claim is a "case of domestic violence".

Shazia's family and friends along with local right to information (RTI) activists staged a silent protest at the Press Enclave on Residency Road Thursday morning.

"There are many Shazias living in our society. They may be on the brink of being murdered or committing suicide," a protestor said.

"It is the moral responsibility of the society to rise up to the occasion and make sure that justice is assured to Shazia and at the same time show support towards those unfortunate women who are still facing domestic violence," he added.

They have also launched an online campaign - 'Justice for Shazia - on Facebook.

"The police have registered a case of suicide in this regard and are awaiting Shazia's post-mortem report," Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police Ashiq Hussain Bukhari told IANS.

The district police chief said if sufficient evidence is gathered during the investigations, police can add other charges like murder to the already registered First Information Report (FIR) in the case.
