Anti-Kudankulam Group Expects Jayalalithaa's Continued Support

Chennai, Dec 8 (IANS): The civil society group protesting against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu Thursday said it saw no danger to its struggle in the wake of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's letter to the prime minister seeking additional developmental funds.

"Soon after she came to power, the chief minister had written a similar letter to the prime minister and there was no response to that. We feel she will support our protest as she keeps the feelings of the people at the forefront," S.P. Udayakumar, coordinator of the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), told IANS.

Jayalalithaa Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking for Rs.25,000 crore grant/loan and additional allotment of power from the central pool.

Kudankulam watchers are of the view that the state government might change its stance on the project if its requests for funds and other things are acceded to by the centre.

"That is one exit option for the state government. Further, no major political party in the state has spoken against the KNPP," an official told IANS, preferring anonymity.

Interestingly, even Jayalalithaa had initially supported the project and urged the protesters to call off their agitation.

"We are not worried as to what the central or the state government would do. We want the government to listen to the people's voice. People are agitating without losing faith," remarked Udayakumar.

He said the chief minister, instead of begging and pleading with the central government, should concentrate on renewable sources of energy, adopt decentralised and demand-based generation schemes, and devise creative energy projects for the state.

He said there is good potential for putting up on-shore windmill projects in India and Tamil Nadu.

"India's 7,500 km-long coast line should offer enormous potential. Some of the satellite studies of 868 locations globally indicate that Kudankulam and Rameswaram have high wind potential of greater than 9 metres per second which equals some of the European farms," Udayakumar said.

However, the PMANE is upset at the comments of Russian Ambassador to India Alexander M. Kadakin that his country was planning to set up a total of eight reactors at Kudankulam.

"Keeping silent now is worse than suicide," Udayakumar said.

There have been widespread protests against the two 1,000 MW nuclear power reactors that the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd is building with Russian technology and equipment in Kudankulam, around 650 km from here.

The project cost is estimated to come up at Rs.13,171 crore.

Villagers fear for their lives and safety in case of any nuclear accident and the long-term impact it would have on the population.

Their agitation has put a stop to the project work, thereby delaying the commissioning of the first unit by several months.

Tamil Nadu government had passed a resolution asking the centre to put a stop to the work at the site till the people are convinced.

In order to allay the fears of the public, the central and the state governments had formed two separate committees. The state panel includes representatives of the PMANE.

Udayakumar said the anti-nuclear power plant activists will hold one-day fast here Friday.

Meanwhile, the relay protest fast at Idinthakarai near Kudankulam continued for the 52nd day Thursday.

10 Nuclear Power Plants have been Planned in Koodankulam. 1 plant has been completed. Another 1plant work has started. So totally these 2 plant only can be allowed in Koodankulam. The other planned Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Power Plants can be shifted 2 each to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh etc. For example in states many available lakes or artificial lakes created slight diversion of Rivers are available in Uninhabited/Less Inhabitated Areas and many Inland Nuclear Power Plants can be established in these states like USSR, USA, Europe, Rajasthan etc.

Also 80 to 90 % Power should be given to these respective states where Nuclear power is generated, since they take the risk of Nuclear Problems. Also the People residing around say 20 to 30 Kms should be given Minimum Rs.1 Crore for rehabilitation (House, Employment etc) for Ordinary workers and Many amount more for those who have more properties.

    Mr. Udaya Kumar,
I am staying near by a Nuclear power plant for the last 32 years. No problem for me or my family’s health and no radiation from this plant. In fact, my area is now more developed because of his nuclear power plant and the associated infrastructure here. So, I cannot understand you and your team’s argument on Kudankulam nuclear power plant. If you are worry about radiation, you should throughout your mobile phone handset. Mobile phone handsets are creating radiation and you start protest for the use of mobile phone and ask your people to throughout the mobile phone handsets.

Power is the prime movers of the development. All form of powers are welcomed. Kudankulam is one of the best example of the required power mix Wind and Nuclear power farms. NPCIL also have 10 wind mills. NPCIL has its secular view towards all the possible energy forms. The approach of activits "We are not worried as to what the central or the state government would do" is anti-national.

At presant, the Indian tax payer witnessing the dirty politics from the state / centre rouling parties leaving the national intrest for development. Mr Udayakumar suggest 7500 km of Indial coast line is suitable for wind energy. Is the fishermen along the cost line will be confertable to do their fishing if laying hundred of thousnds of wind towers with their powerline net work at shore as well as at their fishing water ? He say he is fighting for the livelyhood of the kudenkulam fishermen. Becous of KKNPP no fish or fishermen will be effected. Instead fish breeding will be incresed due to little warm up of sea water.

General public is coming to a realization that vested interests are at work behind these protests. Uday Kumar who has no science background seems to have realized that the radiation leak claim in the event of a tsunami will not work any more. Harnessing alternative energy sources will take a long time while the state would be starved of its power needs. The organizers of these protests must be made to account for the source of funds and this matter resolved soon. Government should be decisive. FDI in retail sector is much less important as compared to the energy needs of the nation. Resolve the issue to commission the reactors that has been built. Then discuss more reactors. It is a matter of national security.

Kudankulam plant to be commissioned without any further delay. Nuclear power is essential to meet the energy dement of 130core Indians. Solar and Wind power cannot meet the energy demand of 130core Indians.
If Government cannot take action to commission this nuclear plant, please handover this plant to military and let them commissioned it urgently. Cannot compare 60yerar old Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant with modern Kudankulam nuclear power plant.
