Rajya Sabha Takes Up Debate on Agrarian Crisis

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS): After a turbulent beginning to the day's sitting with adjournment of the Question Hour, the Rajya Sabha Thursday afternoon took up a debate on the agrarian crisis and farmers' suicides in the country.

Initiating the debate, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member M. Venkaiah Naidu attacked the government for being inactive in controlling price rise.

He accused the government of not being concerned about 60 percent of the country's population and expressed apprehensions if the debate could change the situation.

"Nothing is going to change... We are (just) going to discuss. We are paying tribute to those who are dead, what about those who are alive," Naidu said.

"The finance minister, agriculture minister, commerce minister, all should sit with (the) prime minister and think. If you don't take interest in 60 percent population of the country, what are you doing?" he asked.

"Because they are not organised, we don't listen to them. Farmers are not able to do strike, is it their weakness," he said.

"Time has come now after 60 years to think about the farmers," the BJP member said.

He also pointed out that while consumer prices were going up, wholesale prices were coming down.

Participating in the debate, nominated member Mani Shankar Aiyar called for a special session of parliament dedicated to agriculture.

"There should be a session of parliament dedicated to agriculture," he said.

Earlier in the morning, the upper house was adjourned till noon amid ruckus over demands for the ouster of Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

As soon as the house met for the day, members of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) complained about the home minister's alleged interference in a criminal case lodged against a Delhi-based hotel owner.

They also waved newspaper clippings in support of their demand for Chidambaram's ouster from the union cabinet.
