The workshop focused on enhancing teachers' capabilities in mental health counselling, first aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 45 schoolteachers representing various institutions across Udupi district. Mahesh Prabhu, director of admissions, MAHE, inaugurated the workshop and highlighted the crucial role of teachers in promoting mental health among students. He emphasised that equipping teachers with counselling skills can help students better manage the challenges they face throughout their academic and career journeys.
The mental health counselling session was led by Dr P V Bhandary, medical director and psychiatrist at A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi. He shared valuable insights into identifying and managing mental health concerns among students, offering practical strategies and intervention methods.
The first aid and CPR training session was conducted by faculty from the Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, along with the physiology faculty from DBMS, who demonstrated CPR techniques. The sessions were designed to equip teachers with essential life-saving skills, enabling them to handle emergencies and respond effectively in critical situations.
Participants expressed deep appreciation for the workshop’s interactive and hands-on approach. They found the real-life scenarios and practical exercises particularly impactful, enhancing their readiness to support students emotionally and medically during emergencies.
The workshop’s success was made possible through the support and guidance of Dr Ullas Kamath, head of DBMS and dean of MMMC, and Dr Surekha Kamath, professor of physiology and division coordinator, whose encouragement and leadership played a pivotal role. Dr Sujatha Prabhu P, associate professor of physiology, DBMS, served as the organising secretary, ensuring the event's smooth and efficient execution.
