Nagpur, Jan 7: Two children, aged 7 and 14, from Nagpur have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), increasing India’s total cases to seven. The children, treated for fever and cough at a private hospital in Ramdaspeth on January 3, were confirmed to have the virus, which affects the respiratory tract and presents symptoms similar to COVID-19.

State and Central Response

The Maharashtra health department is on alert for a potential rise in cases and is set to issue preventive guidelines. Citizens have been urged to remain calm and take precautions, particularly if experiencing severe respiratory symptoms.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public that HMPV is not new, having been globally identified since 2001, and emphasized that the situation is under control. Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra also reviewed the situation, confirming no unusual surge in respiratory illnesses nationwide and highlighting ongoing robust surveillance.
