Investigators probe causes of deadly Los Angeles wildfires

Los Angeles, Jan 10: Investigators are exploring multiple potential ignition sources for the devastating wildfires that have claimed at least 10 lives and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in the Los Angeles area.

In Pacific Palisades, a fire that consumed upscale neighbourhoods and homes of celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Billy Crystal is believed to have started behind a home on Piedra Morada Drive, above a densely wooded arroyo.

Lightning, a common fire starter in the US, was ruled out due to the lack of thunderstorms in the affected areas. Investigators are now focusing on other frequent culprits, including arson, utility line faults, debris burning, and accidental incidents.

Utility-related fires have been a significant concern in California. The 2017 Thomas Fire, caused by power lines touching during high winds, charred over 440 square miles and killed two people. However, no utility-related incidents have been reported for the current fires.

Fire analysis expert John Lentini emphasized that even massive fires begin small, with investigators working to pinpoint the origin and cause.

The fires in the Palisades and Eaton Canyon areas remain largely uncontained, with dry conditions and no rain in sight. Experts warn that containment may only be achieved when the fires exhaust their fuel or weather conditions change.
