Mumbai police ban nylon manja to prevent injuries ahead of Makar Sankranti

Mumbai, Jan 11: In a bid to ensure public safety during Makar Sankranti celebrations, Mumbai police have imposed a one-month ban on the storage, sale, and use of nylon kite string, known as ‘manja.’ The ban, effective from January 11 to February 9, aims to reduce the risks associated with the synthetic string, which has caused numerous injuries and fatalities over the years.

Nylon manja, known for its sharpness and durability, has been linked to accidents, particularly involving bikers and birds. In response to these concerns, police have announced strict action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobeying public orders.

A tragic incident last year, where a kite string severed the throat of a 21-year-old man on the Borivali flyover, has further highlighted the dangers. Authorities are urging the public to comply with the ban to prevent further accidents and ensure a safe festive season for all.
