Udupi, Jan 14: Udupi is facing serious traffic congestion due to road closures, diversions, and ongoing construction work. This has caused significant delays for both locals and tourists, especially during peak hours, making daily routines more difficult and time-consuming.
One major issue is the temporary closure of the main road leading to the Sri Krishna Matha. Vehicles are being diverted through Kadiyali, but the road is difficult for heavy vehicles to navigate, leading to traffic jams. The jams are more during busy hours from 9 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 6 PM.
Another major issue is tourists, many of whom rely on Google Maps or road signs. They often get confused by changes in the routes and end up stopping abruptly, blocking traffic as they try to figure out the right way, causing further delays.
At Kalsanka Junction, roadblocks and barricades are forcing vehicles to detour through the Udupi Bus Stand to reach the Kalsanka-Ambagilu route. This diversion has created long delays and worsened the already heavy traffic at Udupi Junction, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
The situation on the Udupi-Malpe road is also causing problems as it creates a huge traffic jam during the busy hours. Construction work near Ambalpady has become a busy but manageable route into a virtual gridlock. The road is a key access point to Malpe Beach, and the added congestion is facing problems for local businesses and commuters, who are stuck in traffic for long periods.
The traffic problems are daily life for Udupi people and tourists. Many visitors are frustrated by the lack of clear instructions and the poor traffic conditions. Local residents have mixed opinions on the situation. Dinesh, an auto driver said, “This is a good initiative because people usually rush and break traffic rules. If the routes are longer but smoother, it will help reduce traffic jams and make travel safer.”
Many people face difficulty by the daily delays, feeling that the lack of proper plans and communication regarding the road diversions. Although traffic police have been deployed, it remains difficult to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles.
