Bengaluru, Feb 3: After last year’s controversy over granting 10% grace marks to SSLC students, Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa has announced that no grace marks will be awarded this year.
With the SSLC exams approaching, last year’s lower results due to webcasting had sparked discussions on how to improve performance. Bangarappa assured that the department had worked on strategies for better results this time, with more support from district education officers.
"The three-exam system is clearer to students now, and they understand the rejoining process if they fail. We’ve held review meetings with district officers and are confident the results will be better this time. Students should not be pressured," he said.
In a strong statement, the Chief Minister also opposed the grace marks given last year, emphasising that this year, no grace marks would be awarded under any circumstances. "We will review the 10% grace marks given during COVID, but this year, there will be no grace marks," Bangarappa confirmed.
To improve results, several initiatives like the 'One Mark a Day' programme, early morning study calls, special classes, mock tests, and group study sessions have been introduced. The department has also ensured that CEOs prepare question papers for the exams.
While last year’s grace marks were linked to the pandemic, Bangarappa made it clear that this year, there would be no additional marks. "We won't repeat the 20% grace marks from last year," he stated.
Students have been requesting smart classrooms and internet facilities, and the education department is working on making these available soon. Additionally, skill-based learning programmes are set to begin shortly.
The list of unauthorised schools is nearing completion, and the department is discussing ways to resolve issues related to school recognition, building conversions, and fire safety regulations.
"We’re addressing the challenges posed by unauthorised schools and will correct any violations,” the minister added.
