Mangaluru, Feb 17: On the eve of International Customs Day 2025, the Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate organised an 'Outreach Programme and Indian Customs Trade Mela' at the New Customs House, Panambur, on Monday, February 17. The event was held under the theme ‘Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity’.
Customs commissioner P Vinitha Shekar inaugurated the event.
The World Customs Organisation (WCO) introduced International Customs Day to recognize the efforts of customs officers in preventing illegal trade, protecting national economies, and ensuring smooth international transactions. Customs agencies play a crucial role in monitoring cross-border trade, enforcing regulations, and fostering economic stability.

Globally, International Customs Day is celebrated on January 26. However, since January 26 is observed as Republic Day in India, it has been decided to celebrate it on February 15. This year, the WCO has adopted the theme ‘Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity’ for International Customs Day 2025.
As part of the celebrations, the Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate organised the Outreach Programme and Trade Fair. The event aimed to showcase the department’s progressive developments and highlight the activities of various trade members and stakeholders through informative stalls. This maiden initiative was made possible with the strong encouragement of the commissioner.
Several stakeholders, including MRPL, NMPA, Adani, primary industries, the district milk association, MCF, Deccan Plastics, TVS, Semnox, and F4 Engineering India Private Limited, set up stalls at the mela. Additionally, an exhibition and sale of products made by specially-abled children from the Chethana Child Development Centre were also featured.
Speaking on the occasion, P Vinitha Shekar said, "The Customs House has taken on a festive spirit. This year, we have a unique theme as we conduct the outreach programme with the trade. Even school students will participate to learn about the role and functions of customs."
Additional commissioner Biju Thomas, assistant commissioner Shobha Peris Bhat, Ramesh Chandra Sridhar, Aravind Raja, and other customs officials were present.
