Mangaluru, Feb 28: Bird flu has been detected in Ballari and Chikkaballapur districts, prompting the health department to take precautionary measures. District health officer (DHO) Dr H R Thimmaiah has advised the public to ensure that meat is properly cooked before consumption.

Speaking at a press conference, he stated that a coordination meeting between the animal husbandry and health departments will be held in Dakshina Kannada DK) on March 1 to discuss preventive measures.

While no cases of bird flu have been reported in Dakshina Kannada so far, the department has already issued alerts and precautionary instructions to taluk-level officials. Dr Thimmaiah emphasized that properly cooking meat can help prevent any infections and urged the public to strictly follow this practice.

 Warning issued for monkey fever

 Dr Naveen Chandra Kulal, district surveillance officer, highlighted that cases of monkey fever have been reported in neighbouring districts, and some patients from these areas seek treatment in Dakshina Kannada. The district recorded a monkey fever case a decade ago, and preventive measures are being reinforced. He assured that specialized treatment for monkey fever is available at Government Wenlock Hospital.

Precautions against heatwave

With rising temperatures in the district, people have been advised to take extra precautions against the heatwave. As examination season is underway, officials have been instructed to raise awareness among parents regarding students’ health and well-being.

Dr Thimmaiah recommended consuming water-rich vegetables and fruits while avoiding carbonated soft drinks, as their high sugar content could lead to health complications.
