New Delhi, Mar 10: The central government has allocated Rs 10,440 cr for the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in the union budget, aiming to enhance rail connectivity and infrastructure in the region, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday.
The fund allocation is expected to accelerate key projects, including new railway lines, gauge conversion, electrification, and modernization of stations. The move aligns with the government’s focus on improving transportation facilities in the northeastern states.

“The Northeast Frontier Railway plays a crucial role in linking the remote areas of the Northeast with the rest of the country. This budget allocation will help in expediting various ongoing and new projects, ensuring better rail connectivity for the people,” the minister stated.
The investment will also support the ‘Act East Policy,’ facilitating trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region. The government has been prioritizing railway development in the Northeast to strengthen infrastructure and promote regional development.
Officials said that significant projects under the NFR zone, such as the Jiribam–Imphal railway line in Manipur and the Sivok–Rangpo rail link to Sikkim, are likely to benefit from the budgetary boost.
With this fresh allocation, the government aims to accelerate railway expansion in the Northeast, ensuring better mobility and improved passenger services.
