Bhopal, Mar 15: A funeral ceremony in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district turned into a tragedy when a shot from a 12-bore licensed gun accidentally discharged, injuring eight people, including a child. The incident took place in Lodni village under the Sondwa police station area around 2 p.m. on Friday.
According to officials, the mishap occurred during the last rites of Nahar Singh, a local resident who had passed away earlier that day. In line with tribal customs, celebratory firing and firecrackers are often part of funeral rituals. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the bullet unexpectedly struck mourners.

Authorities are probing whether the shot was fired prematurely, accidentally, or intentionally. "It is unclear at this stage whether the sarpanch pulled the trigger too soon or if it was an accident. A thorough investigation will determine the cause," said a senior police officer.
Preliminary reports suggest the firearm was discharged mid-action, scattering gun pellets that injured multiple attendees. Police sources indicate that Sarpanch Nan Singh was following the traditional practice of firing in the air, but the bullet hit people instead.
The injured individuals were first taken to the Umrali Health Center for immediate medical aid. They were later transferred to the district hospital, with some being transported on motorcycles due to a lack of emergency vehicles.
Following initial treatment, seven patients were referred to MY Hospital in Indore for advanced care, with four reported to be in critical condition. Among the wounded, nine-year-old Prem Prakash suffered a pellet injury to his leg but was discharged after receiving treatment.
The injured include Prem Prakash (9) from Lodni, Ranchhod Richadia (65) from Mundla, Jhungla Kamaliya (45) from Lodni, Sunil Hardas (17) from Lodni, Rohit Ristram (22) from Lodni, Rakesh Madhu Singh (35) from Bejda, Omprakash Bhushla (23) from Bejda, and Bhangdia Ichchha (26) from Lodni.
Police have registered a case against Sarpanch Nan Singh under Section 100 (culpable homicide) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita, along with other relevant charges. However, another suspect, Gamla Singh Dabar, is also under scrutiny, as the licensed firearm used in the incident was registered under his name. Authorities are investigating whether he unlawfully handed over the weapon.
When asked about further details, the senior officer stated, "The matter is under investigation. As of now, the Sarpanch is the prime accused."
The tragic incident has raised concerns over the practice of celebratory firing during funerals, highlighting the potential dangers of such customs.
