Ranchi, Mar 28: Massive protests erupted in Ranchi on Friday following the murder of a local shopkeeper, leading to widespread disruption as markets remained shut and major roads were blocked by agitated demonstrators demanding justice.
According to reports, the shopkeeper, identified as Ramesh Singh, was brutally attacked and killed by unknown assailants on Thursday night near his shop in the bustling Upper Bazaar area. The murder has sent shockwaves through the local community, triggering anger and outrage among residents.
Protesters, including shopkeepers, traders, and local residents, took to the streets demanding swift action against the perpetrators. Markets across Ranchi, especially in Upper Bazaar and its surrounding areas, remained shut as a mark of solidarity with the victim’s family.
Angry demonstrators blocked key roads, resulting in traffic disruptions and inconvenience to commuters. Police were deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.
Leaders of various trader associations condemned the murder and called for enhanced security measures for business owners operating in the area. “The administration must ensure the safety of shopkeepers and bring the culprits to justice at the earliest,” said Ashok Verma, President of the Ranchi Traders Association.
Police officials have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. “We are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity and questioning potential suspects. All efforts are being made to nab the culprits and restore peace in the area,” said Superintendent of Police (Ranchi) Anil Kumar.
The incident has sparked debates over the growing threat to the safety of small business owners in the city. Authorities have urged citizens to maintain calm while assuring swift justice for the victim’s family.
Normalcy is expected to be restored once protesters' demands are addressed and the perpetrators are brought to book.
