Imphal, Mar 30: Manipur Police have arrested a man in possession of 117 pre-activated mobile SIM cards, suspected to be used for illegal activities, including extortion.

The accused, identified as Wahengbam Ajit Meetei alias Apa (32), was apprehended from Imphal West district for allegedly selling SIM cards registered under other people's credentials without their consent. Officials suspect these SIM cards were supplied to anti-social elements involved in criminal activities.

During the raid, police seized the pre-activated SIM cards from two telecom providers, along with a mobile handset and an Aadhaar card. The suspect is currently being interrogated to uncover possible links to other individuals or networks.

The crackdown follows an extensive police probe launched on February 12 into the sale of activated SIM cards using fake documents. Investigations revealed that such SIMs were being misused by underground militants and extortionists targeting traders, government employees, and contractors.

An FIR was registered at Porompat police station in connection with the case. Authorities have urged mobile service providers to conduct strict periodic verifications to prevent such fraudulent activities, warning of legal action in case of negligence.

To curb extortion and intimidation, the Manipur government has also set up an Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department. This dedicated unit operates round the clock with personnel from the State Police, CAPF, Assam Rifles, and the Army.
