Mathura, Apr 2: A man who allegedly posed as a paramilitary officer to dupe job seekers and marry women fraudulently has been arrested in Mathura, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Harish Kumar alias Saurabh Srivastava, was nabbed from Saunkh Road late Tuesday night. Police said he lured young men with promises of government jobs and extorted huge sums of money from them.

Originally an insurance agent from Prayagraj, he reportedly built contacts in paramilitary and police camps while selling policies. He used these connections to strengthen his fake identity and deceive people.

His arrest followed a complaint filed by a woman from Mathura, whom he had allegedly married under false pretenses while also promising her brother a government job.

During his arrest, police recovered a car with a police sticker, a fake ID card of an SSB assistant commandant, a CRPF officer’s uniform, a nameplate, a UP Police cap, multiple Aadhaar cards, debit cards, and two laptops containing photos of security personnel, including himself in uniform.

According to SP City Arvind Kumar, the accused used social media to showcase himself as a high-ranking officer, frequently posting pictures in different uniforms to gain credibility. Many unsuspecting victims, believing him to be genuine, paid him large sums for government jobs that never materialized.

Apart from financial fraud, police said he targeted women for marriage, exploiting them before disappearing. Investigations have revealed he has committed similar crimes in other locations, and authorities in Prayagraj are also searching for him in connection with fraud cases.

Further investigations are underway to identify other victims and any potential accomplices.
