Gwalior, Apr 13: A 49-year-old medical store owner from Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior tragically died by suicide, reportedly distressed over his daughter’s decision to marry outside their community against the family's wishes.

According to the police, the man was found dead in his bedroom after family members heard a gunshot. Additional Superintendent of Police Krishna Lalchandani confirmed that a suicide note was recovered, written on the reverse side of a printout of his daughter's Aadhaar card.

The note revealed deep emotional anguish over the daughter’s actions. “You did wrong, I am leaving. I could have killed both of you, but how could I kill my daughter?” he reportedly wrote.

The message further condemned the lawyer who assisted the couple, lamenting the perceived breakdown of family and societal values: “The lawyer who sacrifices an entire family for some money – doesn’t he have daughters too? Doesn’t he understand the pain of a father?”

The incident stems from events 15 days prior when the daughter left home with a young man from a different community in the same neighbourhood. She was later traced to Indore and brought back. During a subsequent court hearing, she declared that she had married legally and expressed her desire to remain with her husband.

In the aftermath of the suicide, tensions escalated in the neighbourhood. Relatives of the deceased allegedly assaulted the father of the man who had married the girl. Eyewitnesses claim the man was dragged from his house and beaten unconscious before bystanders intervened and took him to a nearby hospital.

The police have registered a case and are currently investigating both the alleged suicide and the assault that followed.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community and reignited conversations around interfaith relationships, societal pressures, and emotional well-being in families dealing with generational and cultural differences.
