Opposition grows over Colaba Jetty Plan, Milind Deora urges rethink

Mumbai, Apr 14: Opposition to the proposed Colaba jetty project is gaining momentum, with Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora joining a growing chorus of voices raising concern over its location. On Sunday, Deora met Deputy Chief Minister and Mumbai Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde to convey residents’ objections and request a review of the plan.

While supporting the broader goal of boosting water transport infrastructure, Deora pointed out that setting up a new jetty near the Gateway of India already a densely crowded tourist hub could worsen congestion, raise safety concerns, and create inconvenience for both tourists and locals.

In a letter submitted to Shinde, Deora recommended that authorities explore alternative sites such as Ferry Wharf (Bhaucha Dhakka) or Ballard Estate, which he said are better suited to handle increased maritime activity with minimal disruption.

Deora also revealed that Union Ports Minister Nitesh Rane would soon meet with local residents to ensure that development plans reflect community interests. Shinde, he said, assured him that the matter would be addressed at the upcoming District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) meeting.

The Colaba jetty plan has already faced criticism from BJP MLA and Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Rahul Narwekar, as well as former corporator Makrand Narwekar, both of whom have called for a reconsideration of the site.

With civic voices uniting across party lines, the future of the jetty proposal now hangs in the balance as officials weigh development against public interest.
