Mumbai, Apr 15: In a decisive move to enhance road safety and curb incidents of drunk driving, the Mumbai Traffic Police registered 13 First Information Reports (FIRs) over the weekend as part of a special enforcement drive. The crackdown was conducted across the city on April 13 and 14, targeting motorists endangering public safety by driving under the influence.

The FIRs were filed under Section 125 of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, which governs offences related to reckless and dangerous driving.

The announcement was made on Monday through the official X (formerly Twitter) handle @MTPHereToHelp. “In a Special Drive against Drunk & Drive and endangering the lives of the general public, Mumbai Traffic Police on April 13 and 14 registered 13 FIRs under Section 125 of BNS 2023,” read the statement. The police also named the individuals found violating the law.

In a related development, the Seawoods Traffic Unit launched another focused operation beginning March 3, targeting errant auto-rickshaw drivers following a surge in public grievances.

Issues reported included reckless driving, refusal to accept fares, and violation of basic traffic norms.

“Several passengers had complained about reckless driving and fare refusals by some auto-rickshaw drivers,” said a Seawoods Traffic Unit official. “Responding to these concerns, we initiated efforts to discipline drivers through awareness programs and direct enforcement.”

Over 200 auto drivers have faced action in just eight days as part of this intensified campaign. The twin initiatives reflect Mumbai Police's renewed commitment to ensuring safer roads and addressing citizen concerns with swift and strategic interventions.
