Gurugram, Apr 16: Experiencing constant cold feet and a sense of heaviness in your legs? These may not just be signs of fatigue or poor circulation—they could be early indicators of varicose veins, a condition now affecting a growing number of urban dwellers, according to a recent study.
A new health study published in a reputed medical journal has drawn attention to the link between cold feet, leg heaviness, and the onset of varicose veins. The condition, marked by enlarged and twisted veins—often visible under the skin—is caused by weak or damaged vein valves that lead to poor blood flow, particularly in the lower limbs.
Medical experts who contributed to the study pointed out that these symptoms are becoming increasingly common, especially among professionals whose jobs require long hours of standing or sitting.
Symptoms to watch out for:
- Persistent cold sensation in the feet, especially at night
- Heaviness or aching in the legs after prolonged activity
- Visible, bulging veins
- Swelling around the ankles or lower legs
- Mild itching or burning in affected areas
Doctors caution that while such signs may seem harmless initially, ignoring them can lead to complications such as chronic venous insufficiency, skin ulcers, or even blood clots.
What experts recommend:
“Many people associate cold feet with weather changes or tiredness, but it can actually be your body’s way of alerting you to something more serious,” said Dr Vishal Shetty, a vascular specialist not involved in the study. “Timely medical consultation can help avoid the progression of venous disorders.”
Treatment options vary depending on the severity—from wearing compression stockings and improving daily movement to laser-based procedures or minimally invasive vein surgeries.
As awareness grows, health professionals are urging people to not dismiss these early signs and to seek proper vascular assessment if symptoms persist.
