Canada, Apr 19: In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Canada, a 21-year-old Indian student, Harsimrat Randhawa, lost her life after being hit by a stray bullet in Hamilton, Ontario.

Randhawa, a student at Mohawk College, was reportedly waiting at a bus stop on her way to work when gunfire erupted between occupants of two vehicles. Tragically, she was caught in the crossfire and fatally struck in the chest.

The Hamilton Police described Randhawa as an “innocent bystander,” emphasizing that she had no connection to the shooters. Emergency services rushed to the scene around 7:30 PM (local time) on Wednesday and transported her to a hospital, where she was later declared dead.

Authorities confirmed that the shots were fired from a black vehicle towards a white sedan, with both vehicles fleeing the scene immediately after the exchange. Disturbingly, some bullets also struck a nearby house, narrowly missing the occupants who were watching television.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep grief over the incident. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), it said:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario. As per local police, she was an innocent victim... We are in close contact with her family and are extending all necessary assistance.”

Hamilton Police have launched a homicide investigation and are calling on the public to come forward with any dashcam or surveillance footage from the area between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM.
Anyone with information is urged to assist the police as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This tragic loss serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictability of life and the unintended consequences of urban violence. As the community mourns, calls for better safety and accountability grow louder — both in Canada and among worried families back home in India.
