Mumbai, Apr 20: A 16-year-old boy with multiple criminal cases against him created panic in Mumbai’s Bhandup area on Saturday afternoon after attacking a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus with a sword in broad daylight.

According to police, the incident took place around 3:10 pm on Tank Road in Bhandup West. Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage captured the teenager stopping the government bus and threatening the driver, Dnyaneshwar Rathod, before launching a violent assault. In a fit of rage, he shattered the bus windshield and several windows, causing damages estimated at Rs 70,000.

Visuals of the incident show the minor screaming and swinging the sword aggressively. A nearby water tanker and an auto-rickshaw were also damaged in the rampage, with broken windshields spotted at the scene.

Sources suggest the teenager lost his temper after his uncle scolded him and accused him of theft. During police interrogation, he reportedly confessed that the family dispute triggered his violent outburst.

The minor has been detained and sent to a juvenile remand home. Based on the driver’s complaint, Bhandup Police have booked the boy under multiple sections, including criminal intimidation, use of dangerous weapons, and criminal force. The Damage to Public Property Act and the Arms Act have also been invoked.

Officials confirmed that the boy has a history of criminal behaviour, with several past cases registered against him, including charges related to causing hurt and provoking a breach of public peace.

The incident has raised concerns over juvenile delinquency and the ease with which minors are accessing dangerous weapons in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai.
