Kohima, Apr 27: Nagaland Police on Saturday issued an advisory warning citizens about possible attempts by anti-national forces to spread misinformation and false propaganda through social media, following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Citing reliable sources, the advisory stated that inimical forces could exploit the situation to disturb peace and law and order across the country, including Nagaland. It highlighted that platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X could be misused to create and spread false narratives, often using advanced tools such as Artificial Intelligence.

The police cautioned that many such misleading posts originate from social media handles operated by agents based in Pakistan. These posts, they warned, are often downloaded and shared innocently by the public, thereby contributing to the spread of disinformation.
Nagaland Police also expressed concern over the possibility of a surge in newly created fake accounts and handles aimed at propagating emotional and anti-national sentiments to sow discord among communities.
Urging citizens to exercise caution, the advisory stated, "Please do not believe anything that you come across on social media without proper verification and due diligence. Avoid circulating or sharing any content that could disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state."
The police reminded the public that spreading such misinformation is not only socially harmful but also a criminal offence punishable under law.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police, in a similar alert issued on Friday via their official X handle, reported that provocative and misleading messages were being circulated on social media. They warned that forwarding, sharing, or creating such content constitutes an offence and assured that stringent legal action would be taken against offenders.
Tripura Police also appealed to the public to stay vigilant and immediately report any unlawful activity to the authorities.
