Vancouver, Apr 27: A horrific incident unfolded at the Lapu Lapu Filipino Festival in Vancouver, Canada, when a vehicle drove into a crowd during the event, leaving several dead and many others injured. According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), the driver of the black SUV, who struck the crowd at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8 pm on Saturday, has been taken into custody.

The incident occurred during the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, an annual celebration honoring the Philippines’ first national hero. Witnesses shared disturbing videos of the scene, showing multiple victims lying on the ground, some appearing dead or severely injured.

Local authorities have confirmed the fatalities and injuries, though the exact number remains unclear. The victims were reportedly struck while waiting at food trucks or walking along the road.

Expressing his condolences, New Democratic MP Don Davies posted on X, "Just heard the tragic news of the horrendous attack at the Lapu Lapu festival. I am praying for all the victims and their families." Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also reacted, stating, "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today's Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time."

A significant emergency response was deployed to the site, and investigations are ongoing. It is still unclear whether the incident was a tragic accident or a deliberate act.
