Kannur, Jun 19: A woman in her 40s, identified as Rasina, was found dead by suicide at her home in Pinarayi village on Tuesday, days after allegedly facing public humiliation at the hands of a group of men, police confirmed on Thursday.

According to investigators, Rasina was deeply distressed after a disturbing incident on Sunday evening, when a group allegedly confronted her and subjected her male friend to what authorities described as a “mob trial” near a mosque.

The police have since arrested three members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) — the political arm of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI) — in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as V C Mubsheer (28), K A Faisal (34), and V K Rafnas (24), all residents of the same locality.

As per the police account, the men allegedly assaulted Rasina’s friend, confiscated his phone and tablet, and detained him for several hours, summoning family members to an SDPI office before finally releasing him late at night.

A suicide note recovered from the scene pointed to the incident as a trigger for Rasina’s tragic decision, prompting swift arrests. The accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and officials said the investigation is ongoing, with more suspects likely to be involved.

The case has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over vigilantism and moral policing, particularly in rural pockets of Kerala.
