New Delhi, Aug 13: Actress Janhvi Kapoor has approached the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection for her personality and publicity rights amid growing concerns over AI-generated deepfakes, unauthorised impersonation and explicit digital content using her name and likeness.

Kapoor's lawyer, Advocate Asav Rajan, reportedly submitted a list of more than 4,000 links and social media accounts across platforms including Meta and X, highlighting alleged misuse of the actor's identity.

The petition alleges that her name and likeness were being exploited to circulate obscene material, create AI-generated pornographic imagery and sell unauthorised merchandise.

Justice Bhambhani indicated that interim directions would require the removal of offensive material falling under three broad categories — explicit deepfakes and morphed obscene imagery, unauthorised profiles using the actor's publicity rights for commercial gain, and content falsely using her identity to endorse third-party products, services or fraudulent booking agencies.

During the proceedings, the court also expressed caution against imposing an indiscriminate ban on fan clubs and social media pages associated with the actress. The court is expected to determine the precise scope of protection after the disputed material is categorised.

The court declined to issue a dynamic injunction at this stage, meaning fan pages and social media profiles will not face a blanket ban solely because they are associated with Kapoor.

Kapoor is among the latest film personalities to seek judicial protection against the misuse of their digital identity as AI technology makes it increasingly easy to manipulate images and create misleading content.

Earlier, actors and filmmakers including Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Arjun Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Jr NTR and Karan Johar had also approached courts seeking protection of their personality and publicity rights.
