Mangaluru, Jun 24: Recognizing the growing threat of substance abuse among youth, St Aloysius Pre-University College conducted a month-long drug abuse awareness programme aimed at educating students about the risks and realities of drug use. The programme was organized by the Department of Counselling and reached out to all pre-University students over a series of sessions designed to inform, engage, and empower.
The initiative featured a series of expert-led sessions and interactive discussions that aimed at providing students with accurate information, debunking myths, addressing peer pressure, and promoting healthier choices.











The resource persons for the programme included renowned experts in the field of psychiatry, Dr Caroline P D’Souza, consultant neuro-psychiatrist, Falnir Health Centre, Dr Manu Acharya, consultant psychiatrist, Arka Health Care, Dr Rahul Rao, assistant professor, Psychiatry, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions, Dr Rajesh M, assistant professor, Psychiatry, Yenepoya Medical College and Dr Justin Shawn Jason, senior resident, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions.
Each expert brought a unique perspective to the topic, addressing the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and legal consequences of substance abuse. They highlighted the underlying causes of addiction, early warning signs, and the long-term impact on brain development and mental health. Students were also made aware of the importance of seeking timely help, and the available support systems both within and outside the institution. Encouraging students to reflect on their values, choices, and coping strategies, these sessions emphasized the role of self-awareness, emotional resilience, and peer support in preventing substance misuse. They not only raised awareness but also strengthened the college’s commitment to holistic education and student well-being.
