Mumbai, Jun 26: In a landmark decision set to bring relief to millions across Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs statewide. The announcement, hailed as historic, marks the first time in the state’s history that power tariffs will be systematically reduced.
According to an official release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), power consumers will see a 10 per cent cut in electricity bills in the first year, followed by a phased reduction totaling 26 per cent over the next five years. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has approved the proposal submitted by MSEDCL, the state-run power distribution company.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, Chief Minister Fadnavis said, “Good news on electricity tariffs! For the first time in the state’s history, electricity tariffs will be reduced, starting with a 10 per cent cut in the first year, and a total 26 per cent reduction over the next five years.” He pointed out that the proposal to reduce tariffs—unlike earlier petitions for tariff hikes—was a significant step in favour of domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers.
CM Fadnavis also highlighted that nearly 70 per cent of electricity consumers in Maharashtra use less than 100 units per month, and this section stands to benefit the most from the revised rates. Meanwhile, work on the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 is said to be progressing on a war footing, aimed at improving energy sustainability and agricultural support through solar power.
In a broader development context, the Chief Minister also spoke about the ambitious Vadhavan Port project, which is set to redefine Maharashtra’s status as an industrial and logistics hub. “We are building Vadhavan Port, which will be three times bigger than Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA),” Fadnavis said, adding that the new port will cement Maharashtra’s position as a magnet for trade, commerce, and container traffic.
With both consumer-centric reforms and large-scale infrastructure development on the agenda, Maharashtra appears poised for a transformative leap in both economic and civic domains.
