Bhandara, Oct 16: Ten students were injured after a school van fell off a bridge in Surewara village of Maharashtra’s Bhandara district on Thursday afternoon, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid deep potholes on the road.

According to reports, the children were returning home from school when the driver swerved the van to avoid large craters on the poorly maintained road. The vehicle lost balance and fell off a low bridge, injuring the students. All the children were rushed to the district hospital for treatment.

Visuals from the hospital showed doctors and nurses attending to the injured students as anxious parents gathered to comfort their children. Fortunately, all the students are said to be out of danger.

The incident has once again highlighted the poor condition of roads in the region. Angry residents blamed the Public Works Department (PWD) for negligence, demanding immediate repairs and accountability.

Bhandara, often referred to as the “district of lakes” for its nearly 3,500 ancient water bodies, has recently become the subject of local sarcasm. Residents have shared photos of water-filled potholes on social media, saying the civic authorities are turning roads into “new lakes” of the district.
