Srinagar, Jul 1: In a story that reflects selfless devotion and undying love for nature, Ellis Hubertina Spaanderman, a 69-year-old Dutch national, has been silently waging a battle to restore and protect one of Kashmir’s most iconic water bodies – Dal Lake. Fondly referred to by locals as the “Mother of Dal”, her mission, which began nearly five years ago, has now become an inspiring movement.
Having first set foot in the valley over 25 years ago, Ms Spaanderman was instantly enamoured by Kashmir’s breathtaking landscapes. Her connection with the region only deepened over the years, and in a remarkable decision, she chose to permanently settle in Srinagar, making it her home and dedicating herself to the lake’s revival.

Armed with just a rake and unwavering determination, Ellis is seen regularly paddling through the lake’s waters, picking up plastic bags, discarded bottles, and other debris – a sight that has now become familiar to many locals. A recent viral video, shared by Kashmir Rights Forum on social media platform X, shows her hard at work, earning her admiration across the country.
“Kudos to Dutch national Ellis Hubertina Spaanderman for her selfless efforts in cleaning Srinagar’s Dal Lake for the past 5 years. This dedication serves as an inspiration to preserve Kashmir’s natural beauty. Let’s join hands to keep our paradise clean & pristine,” the post read.
Apart from her conservation efforts, Ellis is also known for promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle, often seen cycling through the streets of Srinagar, spreading awareness about sustainable living and physical wellness. Through her Instagram handle, she shares picturesque snapshots of Kashmir, snippets of local culture, and regular updates on her environmental activities – drawing in followers from across the globe.
Her quiet determination has not gone unnoticed. Local residents, tourists, and environmentalists alike have hailed her as a symbol of hope and perseverance. A social media user commented, “What a courageous lady… Following her. Passion and targets at this age. Impressed after I saw your profile.”
As the valley continues to struggle with the effects of tourism and urbanisation, Ellis Hubertina Spaanderman’s crusade to preserve Dal Lake stands as a heartwarming reminder that age is no barrier when it comes to making a difference – and that sometimes, one individual’s commitment is all it takes to inspire a community.
