Jhansi, Jul 7: In a heartwarming display of courage and presence of mind, a young Army doctor delivered a baby girl on the platform of Jhansi railway station using just a hair clip and a pocket knife, drawing praise from witnesses and authorities alike.
The extraordinary incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, when a pregnant woman aboard the Panvel-Gorakhpur Express experienced intense labour pains and had to be deboarded at Jhansi station, according to North Central Railway’s Jhansi Division PRO Manoj Kumar Singh.

Amid the commotion, major Dr Rohit Bachwala (31), a Medical Officer with the Army Medical Corps, who was waiting for a train to Hyderabad, saw a woman being rushed on a wheelchair by railway staff. Instinctively responding, he took charge of the emergency delivery with assistance from a female ticket-checking staff.
“With no access to an operation theatre, I had to rely on what I had with me,” Major Bachwala told PTI. “I used a hair clip to clamp the umbilical cord and a pocket knife to cut it after ensuring the baby was stable. Every second mattered.”
He revealed that the woman had collapsed due to labour pain near the lift area. “There was no time to wait. We quickly created a makeshift delivery area using whatever we could find and ensured basic hygiene. It felt like divine intervention that I happened to be there,” he said.
Thanks to his swift action, both the mother and the baby girl were safely delivered. They were later moved to a nearby hospital via ambulance, with railway staff coordinating the arrangements. Doctors confirmed they were both in stable condition.
What made the moment even more remarkable was that Major Bachwala boarded his train to Hyderabad just in time, after saving two lives on a railway platform.
“As doctors, we must be prepared for emergencies at all times—even when travelling. I consider it a blessing that I could help,” the modest hero said.
