Gaza, Jul 9: At least 20 people, including six children, were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes targeting displaced persons' camps in Gaza, according to the local civil defence agency. The attacks hit Khan Younis in the south and a second camp in northern Gaza within hours of each other.
Medical officials and humanitarian workers report being overwhelmed by daily waves of injured civilians, most of them shot or wounded while attempting to collect food from aid distribution points. The situation has pushed Gaza's already crippled health system to the brink.
“The scenes are truly shocking – they resemble the horrors of judgment day,” said Dr Mohammed Saqr, director of nursing at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. “About 95% of injuries and deaths come from food distribution centres.”
Doctors say Palestinians have been shot while approaching aid centres operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israel-backed body distributing food since late May. Locals describe desperation as residents queue with empty utensils, hoping for basic supplies.
Meanwhile:
• An Israeli government report released Tuesday accused Hamas of using sexual violence during its October 7 attacks. Hamas has denied the charges, which are based on testimonies and forensic findings.
• Ceasefire talks continue, with a possible 60-day truce under discussion. The proposed deal includes the release of 10 living hostages and the remains of 9 others.
• Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump to discuss hostage negotiations and Israel’s goal of dismantling Hamas’s military and governing capacities.
Despite ceasefire negotiations, Israel continues bombing areas in southern and northern Gaza. Humanitarian organisations have issued fresh warnings as aid workers, medical teams, and civilians face growing risks amid deteriorating conditions.
