Thane, Jul 10: A deeply disturbing incident at a private school in Shahapur, Thane district, has led to the arrest of the principal and a female staffer after girl students were allegedly forced to strip for a menstruation check. The episode unfolded on Tuesday when bloodstains were discovered in the school’s toilet, prompting an invasive and humiliating inspection of students from Classes 5 to 10.
According to police sources, the principal summoned the girls to a hall and instructed a female peon to physically inspect at least 12 students who claimed they were not menstruating. The girls were reportedly divided into two groups—those who admitted to menstruating were asked to provide thumb impressions, while others were subjected to private checks.

The incident came to light when students narrated their ordeal to their parents, triggering widespread anger. On Wednesday, irate parents gathered at the school demanding accountability and action. One parent stated, “Instead of educating the girls about menstruation, the principal subjected them to mental pressure”.
Following a formal complaint, police registered a case under sections 74 and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Eight individuals—including the principal, two teachers, two trustees, and a peon—have been booked. The principal and peon have already been taken into custody, while investigations continue.
This incident has reignited conversations around menstrual education, privacy, and the urgent need for sensitivity in schools.
