Singapore, Jul 24: A shocking turn of events has gripped Singapore’s small business community after Jane Lee, the owner of popular eatery Sumo Salad, died under mysterious circumstances — just a day after accusing one of her Indian employees of staging a workplace injury to claim compensation.

Lee, a woman in her 40s and mother of two, had made explosive allegations on Facebook last Friday, claiming that her worker, identified as Sran Kiranjeet Kaur, faked an injury to exploit legal compensation systems. By Saturday, Lee was found dead. The Singapore Police Force is now investigating her sudden demise as a case of “unnatural death”, with the exact cause yet to be confirmed.

In two detailed social media posts, Lee alleged that Kaur — whose employment was set to end within two days — deliberately staged a fall while on her way to dispose of rubbish via an escalator, with the intent of filing a false injury claim.

“She was supposed to leave work early that day,” Lee wrote, “but she stayed back, and later claimed to have slipped and fallen. It became clear to me this was premeditated.”

Lee further accused Kaur of colluding with her husband, also reportedly from India, and working with a legal firm that allegedly advises migrant workers on how to exploit loopholes in injury compensation schemes.

In a pointed accusation, Lee wrote, “They target small businesses that may not have full insurance coverage, threatening legal action or exaggerated claims to extract money.” She even stated she had video evidence of Kaur functioning normally when not under observation, yet dramatically changing her behaviour in front of doctors and others.

Lee ended her final post by saying she felt “unfortunate and helpless”, citing an insurance gap that made her business vulnerable to alleged fraudulent activity.

The case has sparked widespread discussion online and offline, with several business owners expressing concerns over gaps in protection and abuse of compensation laws, while others called for a fair and thorough investigation that does not jump to conclusions about the worker’s guilt.

As the Singapore Police continue their probe, both the circumstances surrounding Lee’s death and the validity of her allegations remain under intense scrutiny. Authorities have yet to issue formal charges or statements about the employee in question.
