Mumbai, Jul 25: A shocking incident unfolded in the city’s Deonar area where a landlord, demanding a pending deposit amount from his tenant, was allegedly mowed down by the tenant’s car following a heated argument.
Anil Chavan, a resident of Dombivli, had rented out his property located in Baiganwadi, Mumbai, to Syed Ali under a heavy deposit agreement of Rs 6 lakh. While Rs 4.5 lakh was paid upfront, the remaining Rs 1.5 lakh had been pending for a long time. Despite repeated assurances, the balance was not settled.
On July 21, Chavan personally approached Ali to request the final deposit amount. However, the conversation turned confrontational. In a shocking turn of events, Syed Ali allegedly lost his temper and ran his vehicle over the landlord, leaving him seriously injured.
Chavan was rushed for medical treatment and later, on July 23, registered a formal police complaint. Based on his statement, the Deonar police arrested the accused. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
The case has drawn attention to the rising number of high-deposit or "zero-rent" tenancy agreements in Mumbai, where landlords lease properties in exchange for a large refundable deposit. While this arrangement reduces monthly rental burdens, it also increases the risk of financial disputes between parties.
Further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the altercation and verify details of the deposit agreement.
