Kangana’s drug remark sparks Punjab-Himachal political row

New Delhi, Jul 25: A political storm has erupted between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh after BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut blamed drug trafficking from Pakistan via Punjab for the rising drug abuse in her home state. Her remarks, which echoed Himachal Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla’s recent “Udta Punjab” warning, have drawn sharp criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Friday, the newly elected Mandi MP claimed, “Drugs coming to Himachal Pradesh from Pakistan via Punjab is affecting youth and families in the state.” She further warned that if not addressed, the situation could mirror that of certain Punjab villages portrayed in the 2016 film Udta Punjab.

Ms Ranaut painted a grim picture of the state's youth, alleging that addiction is pushing many into crime. “Our children are gullible and simple. They’re stealing jewellery, vehicles, and even locking themselves up in rooms crying for help. This is worse than death for their parents,” she said.

Governor Shukla had earlier cautioned that narcotics-related cases under the NDPS Act had jumped from 500 in 2012 to over 2,200 in 2023. “If immediate action isn’t taken, Himachal could resemble Punjab’s drug crisis within five years,” he warned, criticising the lack of rehabilitation facilities in the state.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema hit back strongly, accusing Ranaut of making baseless statements. “She should survey BJP-ruled states before targeting Punjab. The drug problem is worse in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal itself,” he said.

The controversy has deepened political tensions, turning the spotlight once again on the growing drug menace and the need for collaborative state action.
