New Delhi, Jul 26: In the wake of escalating border tensions between Thai and Cambodian troops, India on Friday issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise caution while visiting Thailand, especially avoiding travel to seven provinces affected by the conflict.
The advisory came after reports confirmed the death of 16 people and the evacuation of thousands on both sides of the Thailand-Cambodia border following armed clashes that erupted on Thursday.
The Indian Embassy in Bangkok urged Indian nationals to stay updated through official sources like the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Newsroom, and refrain from visiting tourist attractions located in volatile areas.
"All Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources… before proceeding to any tourist location near the troubled border provinces," the embassy posted on social media.
A TAT bulletin, also shared by the Indian mission, specifically listed places in seven provinces that tourists should avoid.
Thailand continues to be a top international destination for Indian travellers. In 2024 alone, over 2.1 million Indian tourists visited the country, comprising nearly 6% of Thailand’s total tourist arrivals.
Currently, more than 400 flights operate weekly between India and Thailand, connecting over 15 cities. The Indian-origin population in Thailand is estimated at 4 to 5 lakh, including over 25,000 NRIs, mostly residing in Bangkok.
Indian authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that updates will be provided as needed to ensure the safety of all Indian nationals in Thailand.
