Xiangyang, Jul 28: In a shocking incident from China’s Hubei Province, a 72-year-old woman sustained third-degree burns after sitting on a sun-heated stone for just 10 seconds. The incident occurred on July 7 in Xiangyang when the elderly woman, identified as Grandma Wang, was working in her vegetable garden and took a short break by resting on a large stone.
Due to mobility issues, she was unable to get up quickly despite immediately feeling a severe burning sensation. Temperatures in the region had soared to 38°C, turning surfaces like stone and metal into dangerous heat traps.

Doctors at the local hospital confirmed that the woman had suffered third-degree burns, where the entire layer of skin tissue was destroyed, requiring surgical removal of the necrotic tissue followed by skin grafting. “Such burns cannot heal on their own with medication. Surgery is essential,” said Dr Qian Ben, head of the hospital’s burns department.
Medical experts have issued warnings against sitting on exposed surfaces during extreme heat, especially for the elderly and children who are more vulnerable to heat injuries.
Grandma Wang is now stable after surgery, though the long-term impact of her injuries remains uncertain. The incident, first reported by Hubei Daily, has gone viral on Chinese social media, with users sharing similar experiences and calling for greater awareness of heat safety during the ongoing heatwave.
