Mumbai, Jul 30: Noted encounter specialist and senior police inspector Daya Nayak has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), according to a government order issued by the Maharashtra home department on Tuesday.

Alongside Nayak, senior inspectors Jivan Kharat, Deepak Dalvi, and Pandurang Pawar have also been elevated to the ACP rank.

Currently posted at the Bandra unit of the Mumbai Crime Branch, Nayak is a 1995 batch officer who shot to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s for his role in eliminating several dreaded gangsters during Mumbai’s peak gangland era. His life and career even inspired a Bollywood film.

In 2006, Nayak faced a setback after the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed a disproportionate assets case against him. However, after prolonged scrutiny, he was cleared of all charges.

Over the years, Nayak has held several key positions, including a tenure in the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He was also instrumental in probing high-profile cases such as the 2021 Antilia bomb scare and the subsequent murder of businessman Mansukh Hiren.

Known for his fearless policing and decorated service record, Nayak’s promotion comes as recognition of his long-standing contributions to the Mumbai Police force.
