Kanwar pilgrim killed, 3 injured as speeding truck mows down devotees in Madhya Pradesh

Ujjain, Jul 31: A tragic incident marred the Kanwar Yatra on Wednesday night when a speeding truck ran over a group of Kanwar pilgrims in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district, claiming one life and leaving three others seriously injured.

The mishap took place in the Kati Ghati area, situated around 30 km from Indore city. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umakant Chaudhary, the accident occurred when the truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and ploughed into the group of devotees on foot, who were en route to Ujjain as part of their pilgrimage.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Adarsh Rathore, who succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Six other pilgrims were rushed to the Government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in Indore, where three remain under observation. One of the injured is said to be in critical condition and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Following the accident, the driver of the truck abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Police have launched a manhunt to trace and apprehend the absconding driver.

The tragic event has cast a pall over the spiritual atmosphere, as thousands of Kanwariyas continue their journey toward Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple during the ongoing Shravan month. Authorities have assured that investigations are underway and action will be taken against those found responsible.
