Ahmedabad, Jul 31: After evading arrest for over 16 years, Jamna Arjun Chunara, accused in a 2009 highway robbery and murder case, was finally arrested by Ahmedabad Rural Police on Tuesday from her daughter’s residence in Aslali.
The incident dates back to March 18, 2009. A couple returning from a funeral in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia was waylaid around 9 pm between Kamod and Indiranagar. A gang attacked them with a laundry bat and looted their valuables, including jewellery and mobile phones. The injured couple was left on the road until passersby took them to a hospital. The man succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

An FIR was filed based on the survivor’s complaint. Nine people, including Jamna, were named in the case. While eight were arrested and seven convicted, Jamna managed to escape and remained untraceable.
Over the years, she shifted from one village to another across Gujarat to evade capture. Her husband and son were arrested in separate cases and served jail terms, but Jamna continued to dodge the police net—until this week.
Acting on a tip-off about her visit to her daughter’s house in Aslali, the police laid a trap and arrested her, ending a manhunt that had lasted over a decade and a half.
