Mumbai, Aug 10: A fresh political row has erupted following Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh’s revelation that Indian forces shot down five Pakistani fighter jets during Operation Sindoor. While the statement has been hailed by the ruling parties as a display of military might, it has prompted pointed questions from the Congress, igniting fierce political exchanges.
Shiv Sena Hits Back at Congress
Shiv Sena’s Shaina NC led a strong attack on the Congress party, accusing it of “echoing Pakistan’s narrative” by casting doubt on the Air Force Chief’s statement. “The Congress has essentially become a spokesperson for Pakistan,” she said, asserting that rejecting India’s version while entertaining Islamabad’s undermines the armed forces.

Shaina targeted Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi for previously questioning the operations. “Rahul Gandhi hasn’t just insulted the Prime Minister — he’s insulted our brave forces. When the Air Chief himself confirms that five Pakistani planes were downed, it is no longer up for debate. Until Rahul Gandhi accepts this, people will neither respect nor trust him,” she told reporters.
Congress Demands Government Clarity
Congress, however, pushed back, with MP Sukhdeo Bhagat stating that the party stands firmly with the armed forces but is seeking transparency from the government. “We trust our Army. But if Operation Sindoor occurred on April 22, why did the government remain silent for so long?” Bhagat asked, pointing to a lack of official communication even during parliamentary debates.
He further clarified that Rahul Gandhi never questioned the Army’s bravery, adding that their concerns were directed at the government's handling of information and accountability.
Bhagat also questioned Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s earlier statement in Parliament that no Indian soldiers were killed during the operation. “Reports suggest around 10 soldiers lost their lives. Were they not our troops? Why weren’t they acknowledged as martyrs?” he asked.
Mounting Tensions Ahead of Session
The latest exchange reflects the rising political temperatures around defence and national security matters, especially as Parliament remains in session. Operation Sindoor, along with the related Operation Mahadev, has become a flashpoint between the opposition and ruling alliances.
While the BJP and its allies have presented the operations as a significant strategic and military success, the opposition continues to demand clearer communication, official documentation, and accountability for casualties.
As the debate intensifies, both sides appear to be drawing their battle lines not just over military operations, but over the broader narrative of national security and transparency.
