Transport ministry doubles renewal fee for vehicles older than 20 years

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 23: In a move to discourage the use of old vehicles, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced a sharp hike in registration renewal fees for motor vehicles older than 20 years.

As per the latest notification, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles has been doubled from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. For motorcycles, the fee has gone up from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, while for three-wheelers and quadricycles, it has been revised from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000.

Imported vehicles will attract much higher charges — Rs 20,000 for two- and three-wheelers, and Rs 80,000 for four-wheelers and above.

The draft amendment was issued in February and finalised on Aug 21. Notably, MoRTH had previously revised registration and renewal charges in Oct 2021.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court recently directed authorities not to take coercive action against owners of diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles above 15 years in Delhi-NCR, following the Delhi government’s appeal for a more usage-based approach to the end-of-life vehicle policy.
