Jashpur, Sep 3: A tragic incident marred Ganesh immersion celebrations in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh when an SUV, driven by a drunk man, ploughed into a religious procession, leaving three persons dead and 22 others injured.
The mishap occurred late Tuesday night at Jurudand village under Bagicha police station limits, where over 100 locals had gathered for the immersion of Lord Ganesh’s idol. The SUV suddenly lost control and rammed into the crowd on Bagicha–Jashpur road.

The deceased have been identified as Vipin Prajapati (17), Arvind Kerketta (19) and Khirovati Yadav (32). Police confirmed that 22 others sustained injuries, several of them grievous. The critically injured were rushed to Ambikapur Medical College in Surguja district, while others are undergoing treatment at a local community health centre.
The accused driver, identified as Sukhsagar Vaishnav (40), was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He has been arrested and the SUV seized, said Senior Superintendent of Police Shashi Mohan Singh.
A case has been registered and investigation is underway.
