Brisbane, Sep 10: The Mangalorean Catholic Association of Brisbane marked a significant milestone on Sunday with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Monthi Fest at St Pius X Church, Salisbury The event drew approximately 250 members predominantly belonging to the Mangalorean and Goan communities. Families travelled from near and far families uniting in faith, tradition, and community spirit.
The day began with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, celebrated by the parish priest Fr John A moving highlight of the liturgy was a Rosary tableau performed by children, who depicted ten different apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During the Mass, the traditional new paddy (Novem) was presented at the altar and blessed, symbolising gratitude for God’s providence and the bounty of the harvest.
Following the Mass, the congregation took part in a vibrant procession and the flower-showering ritual in honour of Mother Mary, led by the spirited sounds of a brass band.
A traditional vegetarian festal meal was then shared, served on banana leaves (shirothi) and featuring a variety of traditional Mangalurean delicacies including ghosale tel piao, sone sukka, alsando sukka, karathe sukka, kuwalo curry, moong curry, rice, and the signature dessert vorn. Freshly pressed sugarcane juice was also available, with proceeds donated to charitable causes.
The celebration continued with a cultural program compered by Veena Crasta, showcasing the talents of the community. Performances included a children’s prayer dance, singing by Vevila Vas, a lively dance by the Gammath Groovers, a Konkani skit titled “Santhuche Catering”, and spirited community singing, which brought the audience together in joy and fellowship.
Speaking on the occasion, Savio D’Souza, MCAB core committee member said, “This 10th anniversary celebration is not only a tribute to our rich Mangalorean heritage but also a testament to the strong bonds of faith and community here in Brisbane. Monthi Fest continues to unite families across generations in gratitude, devotion, and joy.”
